Music Supervisor. It belongs to a very cool set of people. Christa Miller is one of them.
She is known for her roles in shows such as Scrubs, Cougar Town, and most recently, Shrinking, but we found out that she is also responsible for selecting the scene-setting tunes in these titles, among others.
It helps that her husband is writer/producer Bill Lawrence. He brought us Friends, The Nanny, Boy Meets World, and Spin City and continues to develop fantastic TV shows today such as Ted Lasso and Rooster … so she’s always being challenged with her music choices.
Christa describes herself as a “mix-tape girl” who feels the music and knows what works to create “goose-bump” moments.
I make elaborate playlists, it’s hard to narrow down – interview with Television Academy
What is fascinating is her ability to choose upbeat songs that direct an otherwise sad scene, or subtly heard in the background. It’s her uncanny ability to lift a show up a level with her musical choices.
This mix-tape girl has many songs “in the bank” and shares her playlists with her immediate team to try and pick the songs that best fit scenes that call for a song.
Seems familiar?
Well, how many movies from the 80s and 90s were often defined by their soundtrack? It’s something we’ve grown up with and we’re seeing this playing out on a whole new level.
We now have world class A-list actors who are very happy working on TV/streaming shows (Harrison Ford, Steve Carell and many others), and those performances demand excellent storytelling.
Words and music, folks. Words and music.

Take a look at some of the songs Christa has picked, for Rooster, and look how many are from the 80s/90s;

This podcast does one thing and one thing only: It determines whether songs are "yacht rock" or "nyacht rock."
