Every December, we join the global game of survival… “Whamageddon

Around the world, we all go about our daily lives, but we need to be wary. Lurking in the most unexpected places, is a moment that is creeping up on the unlucky.

It’s the moment you suddenly hear LAST CHRISTMAS by Wham!

So be aware, and mindful – and best honest. If you suddenly find you are getting a whamming, your duty as a participant of Whamageddon is to post on your socials that you’ve been whammed with the hashtag #whamageddon

There are some aspects of this most joyful time that can induce a sort of festive fear. A fear so vivid, it’ll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as if realising it’s Christmas Eve and you’ve yet to do any of your Christmas shopping. Just the mere mention of one single word, especially in the early days of the month of December, can trigger yuletide anxiety. That word is ‘Whamageddon’. – Skiddle

So what are the rules of Whamageddon?

  1. The objective is to go as long as possible without hearing WHAM’s Christmas classic; “Last Christmas”.
  2. The game starts on December 1st, and finishes at the end of December 24th, local time.
  3. Only the original version applies. Remixes and covers are exempt.
  4. You’re out as soon as you recognise you are hearing the song.

Only the few will avoid hearing it.

It is our absolute FAVOURITE festive song, so it kills us to not play it as much as we would like.

I survived!

If you successfully avoided hearing Last Christmas, then you may bask in the glory of the un-whammed by gloating on socials, and joining the friendly community over at the official Whamageddon website.

As a reward you get to click PLAY below.
Warning – if you are actively playing, then you’re about to forfeit if you press play!!

What is the point of all this?

Lore has it, this tradition spawned on a forum for an online gaming platform back in 2010. Whamageddon became a UK-wide phenomenon some years later in 2016 when a Facebook page appeared detailing the rules behind the dreaded game many of us loathe today. Aside from enjoying our favourite festive song, there is no real point, but a chance game of survival and hopefully, glory!

Are Wham! aware of this madness?

Andrew Ridgely is aware of it, acknowledging it in an interview. We’re not sure if George was though.
